merry effing xmass

met up with damon in new york last week. wanted more time. was hard to leave.

left jfk for nova scotia on xmas eve morning. got stuck @ boston airport all day waiting for my connecting flight that had nobody to fly it (pilots & crew were snowed in somewhere in the midwest). luckily met a couple of ex-pats living in boston who eventually gave up like me and took me back to their place for some much needed sleep (thanks kim & jason). finally made it after traveling all of christmas day, which ironically had me fly back to new york to catch the new flight.

jingle all the way!

ho ho ho(ly snow)

crikey there is A LOT of snow! we've had freezing rain already so there is an abundance my least favorite thing, ice. it scares me. i love love love the look of the winter wonderland though. i woke this morning to look out the window and felt the tears run down my face, it was so overwhelmingly beautiful. elisabeth (my cousin's almost 5 year old) has made a little snowman on the front lawn. i feel cozy.

PFK

so, in quebec..."KFC" (Kentucky Fried Chicken)
is "PFK" (Poulet Frite Kentucky). seriously.

i took a pic w/ my phone to prove it:

back in canada

so after a 3 month vacation traveling to cape cod, boston, naushon island, manhattan, san francisco and los angeles, i decided to relocate to start a tech company with my cousin. this is a new part of the country for me. been here a handful of times before, but only 1 handful and it was 10+ years ago.

i'm with my cousin christopher and his wife chantal in the province of quebec, so yes...everyone here speaks french (we speak french and english at home). all of the signs and products are in french. i like it...i feel like i'm in a european country. it's a close to montreal, ottawa and toronto, and only and an hour and a half flight to new york city.

though it is a french province, the city i'm in is half french/half english because it's so close to the nation's capital. the royal embassey of saudi arabia is down the street. eclectic spot.

My good friend Dezso Molnar was one of the judges for the X Prize, which is a $10 Million dollar award for the first privately funded aircraft to travel an altitude of 62 miles...twice.

jaws!

so damon and i had a fantastic vacation on naushon island. we had our own house with a small bay and a view of 'first bridge' from our deck. it was an amazing week of horseback riding, swimming, hiking and sailing.
..BUT guess what appeared in OUR inlet (pictured above) just a couple of weeks later?
A GREAT WHITE SHARK!  [ no kidding ]

Listen to this story... Listen to the NPR broadcast (Real Audio)

Listen to this story... Listen to the NPR broadcast (Windows Media)

the footage we saw on the news was exactly the view we had from our patio. the scariest part is that damon had been swimming back and forth across the bay to first bridge on a daily basis. it's freaky..

another bit of trivia is that we were a 20 minute sail from woods hole, where they filmed the movie "jaws".

tribute of light

Damon and I just got back from NYC where we witnessed the "Tribute of Light" exhibit in memory of the disaster 3 years ago. We were amazed at the sparkles appearing in the lights. It was breathtaking, and somewhat surreal. We were in the West Village, so it was a bit too far away to determine what exactly the sparkles were, but we supposed that they were birds or bats caught in the beams.

I found an article about this on Gothamist, which seems to confirm that they were indeed birds.

w/ love from nova scotia..

wanted to share some pix of where i grew up. it's a beautiful and eclectic place, recently becoming the 5th province to legalize same-sex marriage, and it has the highest tides in the world...
halls harbour beachthe tide coming in at halls harbour
high tide in medfordstonehurst boathouse

trivia:
- nova scotia bends when the tide comes in...as 14 billion tonnes of sea water flow into the minas basin twice daily, the nova scotia countryside actually tilts slightly under the immense load.
- at mid-tide, the flow in the minas channel north of blomidon equals the combined flow of all the rivers and streams on earth.

tips is back in town...

my dahling bruthah tipper is back in america after basing himself out of australia for the past 6-months. he's been gigging all over the world, and says he has even been to hungary a bunch of times. the eastern block is full of hungry breaks heads now. good news indeed.

he headlined at 'mor' in santa monica last night, and i'm always fascinated at how die hard his fans are. there were people standing around the booth all night who didn't move, they just stood watching him, mesmorized.

anyway, tips has been working on music non-stop during his time in oz, and he has an album and 3/4 ready for release. he's around the states for the next couple of months, so i'll keep you updated on his movements. we'll also be updating the echolocation.fm site to be more current with his news and the rest of us echolocation residents .

strangeness and calm

for those of you in london, my friend sandra turnbull, who is a constant inspiration and mentor for me, has a show entitled "strangeness and calm" coming up at off broadway gallery (63-65 broadway market, london, uk) from june 11 till june 28.

also, her partner robert goldstein just launched his website. he is an accomplished photographer and an amazing human being. his website showcases photos he's taken from south sudan, kenya and more.
this image is a picture he took of me in my home in san francisco in 1999.

musee hofstadt

i just checked out the "musee hofstadt" video that devan (c-trl) and nika directed and anna did the soundtrack for...it's stunning.

fast food

must see: "super size me"

valerie and i went to see this amazing documentary which puts actual hard data on paper. it follows the filmmaker who goes on an all McDonalds diet for 30 days, eating nothing but what the joint has to offer. it also delves into what American public schools are feeding their children, and how good nutrition seems to have disappeared from mainstream society.

The Black Heart Procession

the black heart procession

anna and i finally got to see them and wow...i am still completely transfixed.
they are one of the best bands i have ever heard in my life.

..for those of you in san francisco, they're playing the great american music hall tomorrow night (sunday). honestly, do not miss it. mellow dark gorgeous eerie textures and outstanding talent on all instruments. in fact i think anyone who is into pink floyd's dark stuff (er, i guess it all is) will love this band. i especially swooned over the piano and violin. theremin was an added bonus.

good friends

i reconnected with one of my dearest friends lisa goldman last night. she has been an inspiration and guide in my life and i am blessed to have her back.

quincy jones has brought her onboard for his WE ARE THE FUTURE project which is akin to the WE ARE THE CHILDREN project he did 17 years ago. this one will raise money to benefit children in areas of conflict.

12 hours

[did i *really* just spend 12 hours of my life driving?]

so i went to san francisco this weekend. i decided / for whatever insane reason / to drive up and back. why i didn't fly...what was i thinking? well...i was thinking a lot, lemme tell you. nothing else to do but think and drive, really.

anyway...i now have the rest of my stuff, and that's that. done. over. good bye. i spent last night with my friend lina who makes me so happy (thanks bunny) then this morning we brunched with pablo. i got one of his designs which has me completly mezmerized and in love with my second inanimate object (number one being the car i bought last week) please look at this light -- tho you have got to see it to appreciate it fully. as soon as i got home i put it up. it's incredible.

i am exhausted but the chapter is closed. i am blessed.

last night

ahhh, the harvest event. absolutely amazing music and people. highlights were DERU, 8FM, RD & NKTAR (who caught me w/ a surprise attack - they're outside recordings doods from north carolina)....deep twisted electro/techno coiled up in dubby-organic-tripped-out-head-tweaky melodies. my groove was on the dance floor the whole time.

i'm sad i missed EDIT and LOGREYBEAM tho. edIT did give me an advanced copy of his album coming out on planet mu record (thank gawd - 'cause it's been pushed back for release in april). i am in love.

life = good.

And lose myself in cyber days, To see you here in
cosmic rays, The lens cap fills with lilac

a retrospective...

LEE BONTECOU was one of the few women artists to receive major recognition in the 60's. i just went to 'a retrospective' at the hammer museum. absolutely jaw-dropping pieces. inspiring...

-> the show is at moma chicago > 14 feb - 30 may
-> and at moma qns new york > 30 july - 27 sept

"Bontecou arrived at the idea of creating lightweight welded frameworks resembling boxes and infilling them with wire mesh, canvas, and muslin to impart a painterly sense of depth and illusion. The resulting objects, while primarily geometric in form, resembled rough-hewn machines with a curiously handmade presence."
